Empowering Communities through Education
Better than School Enterprises (BTS) is a dynamic, community-based organization with over 20 years of experience working with grant-funded programs that focus on the holistic development of students and their families. As a multi-grant cycle awardee of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) grants, BTS has consistently demonstrated exceptional performance and is an uncommon recipient of multiple 21st CCLC grants within a single cycle. Our organization is in great standing with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) as a subgrantee, known for delivering high-quality, impactful programs.
This year, BTS was awarded four separate 21st CCLC grants across four schools: Beacon Heights Elementary School, Columbia Park Elementary School, District Heights Elementary School, and Judge Woods Elementary School. Three of these schools are located in the Glenarden, Landover, and Riverdale areas, collectively known as the greater Glenarden region. These areas are designated as high-need by the state, and BTS is committed to addressing the unique challenges faced by students and families in these communities. Additionally, we have signed an agreement with G. James Gholson Middle School specifically for future initiatives, further solidifying our presence and focus on the greater Glenarden area.
At BTS, we have built a strong network of partners, including many local vendors and organizations that provide enrichment programs, ensuring our students receive well-rounded educational experiences. We also have an LEA (Local Education Agency) agreement with Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS), which further strengthens our capacity to deliver impactful programs. Our partnerships with other community-based organizations allow us to offer services beyond education, touching on critical areas such as health, housing, and economic development—key factors in building strong, resilient communities.

Our History
Founded over 20 years ago, Better than School Enterprises (BTS) began as a grassroots initiative to address the gaps in education within underserved communities. Recognizing the need for holistic support systems for students and their families, BTS quickly expanded its services beyond traditional academics to include social-emotional learning, family engagement, and community collaboration.
Throughout its history, BTS has been awarded numerous grants and established a reputation for excellence in educational programming. Our initial partnerships with local schools and community organizations laid the foundation for what would become a wide-reaching impact across multiple grant cycles, including being one of the few organizations to receive multiple 21st CCLC grants within a single funding period.
Our success is grounded in a deep commitment to the communities we serve. Over the years, BTS has expanded its footprint, particularly in high-need areas like the greater Glenarden region, where we continue to address the evolving challenges faced by students and families.
