Our Story: The Heart of BTS
Better than School Enterprises (BTS) began with a simple act of kindness and a vision for something greater. In 1996, a young and passionate English teacher saw a need in her community that she couldn’t ignore. Inspired to make a difference, she launched Community Tutoring, Inc., a small program held in a local community center. Her idea was straightforward yet profound: provide a safe and supportive space where students could receive homework help and encouragement, all while enjoying a hot dog and chips.
What started as a modest effort quickly revealed a much larger need. She and her colleagues were amazed at the number of students and parents who eagerly joined, seeking not just academic support but a haven where children felt cared for and valued. The program became more than just a place to complete assignments; it became a lifeline for families, offering hope and opportunity.
From those humble beginnings, BTS has grown into a thriving organization that now serves nearly 600 students annually, from kindergarten to college. Many of the students touched by Community Tutoring, Inc. years ago have remained with the organization through college and into their professional careers, now serving as key leaders of BTS and carrying forward the same mission and passion that inspired its founding.
Today, BTS stands as a testament to the power of community, perseverance, and heart. It’s not just about education; it’s about changing lives, one student at a time.
Our History
With over 20 years of experience, Better than School Enterprises (BTS) is transforming education through innovative, student-centered programs that attract and retain learners by meeting their unique needs. As a multi-award recipient of 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) grants, BTS has developed creative solutions that inspire engagement, foster growth, and deliver measurable impact in high-need areas.
This year, BTS was awarded four 21st CCLC grants across four schools, further solidifying our role as a leader in designing programs that captivate students. Our dynamic initiatives integrate academic enrichment, leadership development, and hands-on learning opportunities, ensuring that students not only succeed academically but also gain the skills and confidence to excel in life.
Our innovative approach includes tailored enrichment activities, mentorship opportunities, and experiential learning projects that resonate with students, keeping them engaged and motivated. Strong partnerships with Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) and local organizations enhance these programs, allowing us to deliver cutting-edge solutions that meet the evolving needs of students and their families.
